The coach has the following responsibilities: • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve • Encourage client self-discovery • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies • Hold the client responsible and accountable The role of the wellness professional is to help clients identify and pursue goals that are related to general health, specifically nutrition and exercise. Wellness professionals accomplish this through a self-help approach that is guided by a knowledgeable professional in the areas of health, wellness, exercise, and nutrition. Specifically, the wellness professional works with clients to help them adopt and maintain healthy behaviors so as to improve and extend the quality of life through the utilization of scientifically proven behavior change psychological skills, exercise programming, and nutritional advice planning. The obesity epidemic is increasing the need for emerging occupations that can work effectively with sound exercise, nutrition, and behavior change principles. Fitness and wellness professionals who specialize in behavior change use psychological principles to achieve greater client results. They have the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to work with clients on the various barriers that are impeding progress.
