JONATHAN GRUBER: This is 14.01. I'm John Gruber and this is
microeconomics. Today I want to cover three things. I want to
talk about the course details. I want to talk about what is
microeconomics. And then I'll start the substance of the course
by talking about supply and demand.
Couple of the points about the course -- the course will have a
distinct sort of policy angle to it. I sort of do economic policy,
government policy is my thing. So I think it's what makes
economics exciting and it sort of offers, I think, an interesting
angle to understand why we're learning what we're learning. I
think sometimes in an intro class...
It can be difficult to understand why you are doing certain things.
However, that is just a small aspect of the topic. If you are
interested in learning more about this, I teach a course called
1441. Although I am not teaching it this year, it will be taught by
a visitor in the spring named Kristin Butcher from Wellesley. I will
be teaching the course next year. This course delves deeper into
policy issues. While I will be using government policy as an
organizing theme, it will not be the main focus of the class
