Illegal challenge (misconduct)
Rio Ferdinand for Manchester United was fouled in his box as the Liverpool player
miss controlled the ball and tripped him. The play was obviously then penalised as
that challenge was unfair and didn’t give the defending team the opportunity to
stand within his grasp. This had resulted in the referee making decision and giving a
free kick to Manchester united as they had the possession of the ball rightfully. Also
to confirm that the player committed an offence he would communicate with his
fourth officials (assistant referee) to see if they both agree if there was a foul taken
place or not.
Advantage rule
The player from Liverpool was fouled as he was surrounded by 2 players from
Manchester United whilst dribbling past. This lead to the referee pointing his hand
out to the Manchester united side rather than awarding Liverpool a free kick as they
already had possession of the ball and therefore continue their forceful attack. As the
opposition team had no intentions of winning the ball whatsoever due to aggression,
the referee prosecuted them by awarding them a yellow card as a sign of warning
and prevention for next time. This rule was applied from the referee because he
thought it would be unnecessary to stop the game from a minor foul.
Starting the game
This is a primary rule for the referee to allow the game to proceed. For example in
the Manchester united versus Liverpool game, the referee must ensure that both of
the keepers from each team must confirm they are ready and had a quick scan to see
his fourth officials are next to the reference points to an extent where they can also
observe the game and make decisions if the main referee is out of range. The referee
needs to ensure that the eleven players from each team are behind the ball and their
halves as the ball must be remained stationary in the centre mark. The referee then
blows the whistle as he believes that everything is right and produces a signal to set
the match live and ready to go.
