HOW WE CAN COMBAT
INFERTILITY?
A brief Discussion on FERTILISATION
The process of fusion of sperm with ovum is called fertilization.
During copulation, semen, which is released by penis, rapidly swim, pass through the cervix,
enter the uterus and finally arrive at the ampullary region of fallopian tube.
What is the game changer in deciding fertilization ?
Fertilisations can only happen if the ovum and sperms are transported to the ampullary region
in simultaneous manner.
That is why not all copulations lead to fertilization and thus pregnancy.
Also when the sperm comes near the zona pellucida layer of the ovum, it causes changes in the
membrane leading to blockage of the entry of additional sperms ensuring that only one sperm
can fertilise an ovum.
Discussion about infertility
Inspite of sexual cohabitation that is unprotected, a large number of couples are infertile.
Reasons could be many–physical, congenital, diseases, drugs, immunological or even
psychological.
Infertility clinics could be helpful in diagnosis and treatment (corrective) of some of these
disorders and enable these couples to have children
Assisted reproductive technologies
In In vitro fertilisation (IVF–fertilisation outside the body in conditions which are similar to that
in the body) which is followed by embryo transfer (ET), ova collected from the wife and sperms
collected from the husband are caused to form the zygote under replicated conditions in the
laboratory. It is also known as test tube baby programme
