CHAPTER1
MATTER IN OUR SURROUNDINGS
NOTES
Q. WHAT IS MATTER??
➤ Things that occupy space and have mass. In other words,
they have both mass* and volume**
⚈Matter exists in the form of five Basic elements
(According to Indian and Greek philosophers)
CALLED—> “PANCHA TATTVA”
-> AIR
-> EARTH
-> FIRE
-> SKY
-> WATER
● Modern-day scientists have evolved two types of classification of matter based on
their physical properties and chemical nature…
1.1 Physical Nature of Matter
1.1.1 MATTER IS MADE UP OF PARTICLES
ACTIVITY 1
, 1. Take a 100 ml beaker.
2. Fill half the beaker & mark the level of the water.⚈●⚈⚈
3. Dissolve some salt/sugar.
Observe the changes —>
⚈WHERE DOES SALT DISAPPEAR?
⚈DOES THE LEVEL OF WATER CHANGE?
⚈WHAT WOULD HAPPENED TO THE SALT?
NOW, In as we know MATTER IS MADE OF PARTICLE.
—> When we dissolve salt in water, the particles of salt get into the spaces
between water particles.
The SI Unit of mass is kilogram (kg).
The SI unit of volume in cubic meters is (m^3).the common unit of measuring
Volume is liter (l) such as
—> 1L= 1L = 1 dm3
—> 1L = 1000 ml
—> 1 mL = 1 cm3
1.1.2 HOW SMALL ARE THESE PARTICLES OF MATTER?
ACTIVITY 2.
