Where?
In this chapter we will learn about the relationship between dates and history, we will learn the periodization
of Indian history & we will be comparing the different sources used by historians to study the colonial
history of India. From now on we will study the modern history of India.
1.1 How Important are Dates?
A time when history was synonymous with dates. [data obsessed]
History is all about comparison. [before and after]
Everything has a history. [tea, railway, paper]
Then everything must but it is actually incorrect to fix precise dates to
Have a time period process. There can be no one clear date for
the processes.
E. g: People in India did not began drinking tea
One fine day
Then why do we associate history with a lot of dates?
This is because earlier, history was an account of battles and big events for example
when the king was crowned, married, died etc. This is one way of recording history.
Another way of recording history is also there which is not date centric but event
based. For example, how did the early people earned livelihood and what did they
produce and ate.
