Part A
1. Distinguish the concept of freeze and fawn. [10 marks]
1) Freeze and fawn are both coping mechanisms that individuals may use in response to
perceive challenging situations. Both mechanisms are part of the body’s stress
response which is known as the fight-or-flight response.
The freeze response is something like an individual becomes paralyzed when he or
she is facing constant stress. It is said that the person will only freeze in place which
leads them to unable to act. When it comes to facing situation like this, the person
struggles to make decisions as the person’s amygdala becomes hyperactive and it will
start to cause the release of stress hormones like cortisol. This type of reaction can
simply lead a person to have feelings of fear and anxiety.
Fawn response is referring to a person trying to please others so that they can avoid
conflict. This type of coping mechanism is usually used by people who are people-
pleasing and also who are willing to do whatever to get accepted by others. In the
workplace, people who use this fawn response may be bullied by just agreeing on
unreasonable demands, doing a lot of tasks when they are asked to do so, and ignoring
their own needs and opinions just so there will be no conflict. This approach can be
said that it is used to get rid of stress by avoiding conflict but it may lead to low self-
esteem and also the person may feel hard to set their own boundaries at the end of the
day.
2. Provide a definition of burnout and list four typical indicators or signs of
burnout. [15 marks]
