What is an implicit statement? -An implicit statement has implied meanings that are not stated outright. -implicit = implied; explicit = expressed How are transition words used in text? -to create connections and organize the text. -Some examples of transition words are: and, because, however, and first. What are some examples of visual stimuli? -maps, charts, and graphs -Some examples of visual stimuli that you can expect to see on the exam are pie charts and line graphs. Know how to read these for meaning. What are the three purposes an author can have for writing? -to persuade, inform, or entertain -The author may have just one purpose or there could be more than one. How can you tell if a statement is a fact or an opinion? Facts can be proven by evidence to be true. Opinions are someone's personal thoughts or beliefs. Some clue words for opinions are: believe, suspect, should, and like. What does sufficiency of evidence mean? -It means that the author has given enough evidence for an argument to convince the reader that the argument is valid. -Think about whether or not the author has successfully persuaded you to see their side of the argument with their evidence. Where can you find the main idea of a text? It will generally be found in the first paragraph, possibly in the first sentence. The main idea may be explicitly stated or you may have to infer the main idea from the supporting details. What is third-person omniscient point of view? -The narrator is all seeing and all knowing. -The text that is written includes the thoughts and actions of many or all of the characters. How do you find the author's argument in a text? Find the main idea and then find the author's position on it. If the main idea is about standardized testing, you must read through the text to see if the author is for or against it.
