IELTS Scoring Bands
Overview
● International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses English language
proficiency of non-native speakers.
● Scored on a band scale of 0-9 in four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
● Bands are calculated as whole or half bands, e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0.
Listening Module
● 40 questions, 30 minutes.
● Consists of four sections with 10 questions each, increasing in difficulty.
● Questions include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form completion,
and note completion.
Scoring
● Each correct answer is worth one mark.
● Scores are converted to the IELTS band scale.
Reading Module
● 40 questions, 60 minutes.
● Consists of three sections with varying types of texts (informational, persuasive, etc.).
● Questions include multiple choice, identifying information, identifying writer’s viewpoints,
matching headings, matching features, summary/note completion, and diagram labeling.
