Week 6 Respiratory System-Anatomy

Part 2 Complete the lab report.

Respiratory Anatomy Lab Report

1. Purpose:

Please state in your own words the purpose of the lab.
The purpose of this lab is to understand and be able to describe the gross anatomical
feature of the respiratory tracts, how the respiratory tract carries air to and from the
lungs, understanding of the upper and lower respiratory tract, voice production,
pulmonary ventilation. Be able to explain Boyle’s law, how it relates to changing
intrapleural and alveolar air pressures and volumes during respiration and to be able to
define the volumes. And at the end, the goal is to learn and understand how our
respiratory system operates.

2. Procedure:

Briefly discuss the procedure for this lab.
Accessing the Anatomy TV to learn about the respiratory system
Understanding and recognizing the upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tract
Understanding the manner sound is produced and actions required when moving vocal
folds.
Understanding inhalation and exhalation as well as Boyle’s law in pulmonary ventilation
Distinguish between the lung volumes and capacities
Know and understand the respiratory membranes and gas exchange.
Understand the control and regulation of respiration.

3. Data and Details:

a. List 4 functions of the respiratory system.
Gas exchange – the diffusion of O2 to the lungs and the expulsion of C02 and H2O out
of the lungs
Ventilation – the delivery of O2 to the lungs and the expulsion of CO2 and H2O out of
the lungs

, Blood pH – the regulation of the acid-base levels of blood
Protection and defense- the process of protecting surfaces from dehydration and
temperature change and defending the body against inhaled pathogens.

b. Identify and label the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage and the epiglottis in
this image of the larynx.

4. Questions:

a. According to Boyle’s law, how are pressure and volume related, given a
closed container?
The pressure of gas in our lungs is inversely proportional to the volume in our
lungs. Boyle’s law describes how air moves into and out of the lungs during
inspiration and expiration. By changing the volume of the thoracic cavity, the
pressure changes in the lungs, increasing volume of the thoracic cavity leads to a
decreased pressure, thereby causing the air to flow into the lungs causing
inspiration.
So, according to Boyle’s law, it states that the pressure of a gas in a closed
container is inversely proportional to the volume of the container. That is pV =
K(constant).
