Health and safety is pivotal in sport to protect the athletes that are playing there individual sports. In addition, this is why
governments and governing bodies for specific sports create different laws and rules for the players to follow by the
ensure that they themself are safe. Players must follow these laws and rules to make the sport safer overall for everyone
participating. Coaches and managers have a duty of care to their players and team to ensure that they are all safe and
following the guidelines and rules set by regulatory bodies. If this does not happen then the probability of a sport related
injury occurring is much higher as the rules set are looking to prevent risk and injury from occurring in the first place.

Health and Safety Work Act (1974)
The health and safety work act is a statutory law that ensures that people going to a workplace are safely in hands of
their employers to prevent injury and possible death from risks that are part of the place they go to work.
In sport, this could be used in an example of a local cricket club being set up. The club is open to the public and
therefore, the person who manages the club needs to follow the acts that ensure the safety of the participants.
Example: The risks of getting hit by a cricket ball, managers/coaches need to ensure that everyone is wearing a
helmet when batting and wicket keeping as well as when your at gully because you are at risk of getting hit from a
close distance at fast speeds which could be fatal. For Under-18’s it is required for them to wear a helmet in practice
and game situation varying at any speeds of bowling.
