Sports Leadership
,A leader must have a good level of skills, qualities and characteristics in order to be a
successful and effective leader. A skill is the ability to do something well. A quality is a
distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by an individual. A characteristic is a feature
belonging to a person which constructs and forms their identity to others.
P.E teacher
The role of a school PE teacher is to educate their students on sports whilst also allowing them
to maintain their exercise and physical activity levels. PE teachers are trained to teach many
sports to students such as football, basketball, rugby, cricket and table tennis.
Skills of an PE Teacher
Engagement
1)Engagement is when the leader keeps the focus and concentration of the group, they are
leading or coaching. PE teachers will need to maintain high levels of engagement with students
as it will then make the sessions more enjoyable for the students to participate in and this will
reduce boredom. During PE sessions, Teachers are constantly engaging with the entire class.
This causes him to get his point across to the entire class effectively. For example, during
football lessons during the first half of the lesson we will be taught something new in football
such as passing or shooting drills. However, in order to keep us engaged and not bored we will
then get into teams of 5 and play competitive matches. This will allow us to implement our new
skills and maintain interest in the lesson. A potential negative of this skill is that the leader may
be too stressed as they are trying to keep a difficult or unfocused group engaged with them.

Confidence
2)Confidence is when a leader has self-belief and is certain about this coaching. High levels of
confidence is good for PE teachers as this will allow them to speak confidently to students and
will be able to give good feedback and advice. Showing confidence will also allow students to
admire teachers as they believe they are knowledgeable and will then listen more often to
teacher’s advice and this builds trust. Teachers show the class that he is confident in his own
ability and then this causes those around them to feel confidence in themselves. In order to
create good confidence you must first have other elements in place such as Organisation,
experience, having clean objectives and understanding the demand of the role. A potential
negative of this may be that some students may see the leader as over-confident and arrogant.
Therefore, they may not listen and focus on their advice as they do not trust them fully.

Communication
,3)Communication is when someone effectively delivers an idea or message to someone else.
Having good communication during a training session is important for a PE teacher. This is
because it shows students that teachers are knowledgeable and know what they are talking
about. This also provides students with additional support as they may find to be more
comfortable with a vocal teacher as they know they will be able to ask questions. Therefore,
students will be able to listen to teacher’s feedback and can improve their performance. A
potential negative of this may be that even though the leader has portrayed the ideas with good
communication, participants may still not take onboard the advice.

Good Feedback
4)Good Feedback is able to provide students with good feedback points so that they can
improve their performance. Delivering good advice and feedback back to students is very
important for teachers as this can very much help students improve their performance in the
long term. Constructive feedback to someone will allow students to progress at their chosen
sport and will also then impact their confidence. For example, during our Leadership mock
assessments Teachers will give us feedback and advice on how to improve our leadership skills
so that we can perform better for our actual leadership training session. This allowed some of
my friends to progress from a Level 2 Pass to a Level 2 Merit in that Unit. A potential negative of
this may be that students may feel offended by the criticism and this can ruin leader + student
relationships.

Qualities of an PE Teacher
Positivity
5)Positivity is when someone is confident about performing well and winning. A good positive
leader will create a friendly and healthy environment. Positivity will allow students to feel
comfortable during the teacher’s lessons and this will create a happy learning environment for
the students. Showing positivity shows students that teachers are passionate and are willing to
teach and care for the class. During Lessons, Teachers will greet all the members of the class
with a friendly gesture and ‘Good Afternoon or Good Morning’. This level of positivity is crucial,
especially in sport as performers will need to be in the right frame of mind in order to progress
and achieve their aims. A potential negative of this may be that leaders may be too focused on
creating a positive atmosphere that they miss the crucial teaching points of the lesson.
However, a too positive environment can cause toxic positivity. This may cause the group to
perhaps force a face of happiness as they think this is the norm of this environment and will
keep their negative thoughts to himself as it will ruin the atmosphere. A negative of being a
positive leader is it may not be as realistic. This is because positive leaders may see a positive
out of all negatives and may

Empathy
6)Empathy is the ability to understand the way people are feeling. Good leaders will show
empathy during training. When PE teachers show empathy to their students this gives them a
better understanding of each individual student and this allows them to teach their session more
effectively as they understand the level of ability in the class. This is also helpful as during
everyday life people have responsibilities placed on them and this may cause them to
experience stress. A good PE teacher will be able to listen and emphasise with students. This
will allow students to feel comfortable around teachers and talk about their concerns or anxieties
and this will make them feel more valued and understood. Therefore, this could then increase
their performance as an empathetic teacher has increased their confidence and self-esteem. A
negative of this could be that empathetic leaders may find it difficult when it comes to dealing
with disruptive and homophobic learners as they may not have full control of the class and not
issue the necessary sanctioned punishments.

Characteristics of an PE Teacher
Approachable
7)Being a Friendly and Approachable person will allow you to build trust and healthy
relationships with students. Being approachable allows students to feel comfortable around
leaders and this then allows leaders to assess the strengths + weaknesses of individuals as well
as things that encourage them and things that cause them to feel stressed or anxious. People
will also be able to discuss their problems with you without hesitation or embarrassment as they
believe you are able to help them and teachers are easy to talk to as they understand student’s
problems. For example, Teachers are experienced, this means that they are in charge of
behaviour and manners during PE lessons. If students feel threatened or intimidated by peers
they trust and ask for help from Teachers as they are in a superior position and will be able to
sort out issues and problems.

Consistent
8)Consistency is very crucial for PE teachers as they will need to promote safety and follow the
rules as they allow all team members to feel included and show equality in a leader. By showing
consistency this removes biased opinions as they allow everyone to be fairly judged. Leaders
must also be consistent in the training that they teach. For example, they must deliver
instructions of techniques in the same manner so that it is easier for beginners to learn and
follow the instructions. Consistency is good to have as it maintains good relationships with
students as well as allowing them to not experience favouritism which may cause jealousy and
envy in other students. A negative of being a consistent leader is that during training sessions
