Carpentry is a common term with any class of work with wood. The wood work or carpentry is
an art of timber. The wood work deals with making joints for a variety of applications. It is a
branch of craft and modern engineering
WOOD
Wood is available in nature in the form of trees. Useful part of the tree is cut and is used for
carpentry work. Trunk is the most useful part of the tree.
Timber
The wood obtained from fully grown trees is cut and is prepared for engineering purposes. This
wood is known as timber. Timber also have three forms, when it is in the form of a complete tree
then it is termed as stationary, after cutting the tree in the form of logs it is rough form and after
sawing it to market size it is commercial timber. Timber has the following advantages over the
other materials:
1. Easy to work on it by the help of different tools for achieving the required specification.
2. Lighter in weight in comparison to other available materials but having the required strength.
3. It is cheaper as compared to other raw material and easily available.
4. Good response to polishing and painting.
5. Very suitable for doors, windows and furniture work, because these items involve lot of joints
and timber can be easily converted into joints.
6. Sound proof in nature and good resale value.
7. Good strength.
8. Timber is a poor conductor as such it is preferred in the construction of the houses.

1. Steel Rule: It is made up of stainless steel and is marked with scales. In this scale
also there is graduation in both inches and centimeters and inches and centimeters
are also further divided into smaller divisions. In this scale the conversion table
between different units is also mentioned.
2. Inch Tape: It is made up of a flexible thin steel strip. It is folded around a centre pin
attached with a small handle. It is graduated.
3. Four fold box wood rule: It is generally 2 feet long and is folded from three
places. It is marked with inch and millimeter scale. The inches are further divided
into 8 and 16 parts. Whereas the centimeters are sub divided into millimeters. It is
used for marking and measuring.
