, DEFINITION:
osteoarthritis is a progressive inflammatory disease of joints
characterized by focal loss of articular cartilage, subchondral
osteosclerosis, osteophyte formation at the joint margin, and
remodeling of joint contour with enlargement of affected joints.
EPIDERMIOLOGY:
it has been estimated that 45% of all people develop knee OA and
25% hip. There are major ethnic differences in susceptibility due to
various cultural practices. For example people in Africa, China, Japan
and the Indian subcontinent are susceptible to knee OA due to
frequent ground sitting than hip OA .
CAUSES:
* idiopathic
*repetitive strain
*age related degeneration
RISK FACTORS:
*increasing age
*genetics(ex: skeletal dysplasia)
