INTRODUCTION
R.K.Narayan is one of the leading figures of early Indian literature in English. He has
written many famous novels and short stories with Indian background. Swami and
friends, The English Teacher and The Financial Expert are some of his important
novels. The novel The Dark Room focuses on the male dominating society and the
endless sufferings of traditional woman in India.
RAMANI AND HIS FAMILY
The story is the depiction of Ramani’s family consisting his wife Savitri and his three
children Kamala, Sumathi and Babu. Ramani is an Office Secretary of an insurance
company in Malgudi. He dominates his wife, children and his servants. Savitri is a
traditional wife and she never raises her voice when her husband shouts at her and
children. She is very dutiful and devoted to her family.She has no freedom at home
and Ramani’s words are the law of the house.
SAVITRI’S WITHDRAWAL INTO THE DARK ROOM
At the time of Navaratri Babu tries to fix the colour lights, the electricity gets
snapped. The entire house is in darkness. Ramani is madly angry and beats his son
brutally and scolds at Savitri. She feels terribly sad and retires to the dark room and
cries there. She refuses to eat. The next day Ramani happily goes to office without
bothering her. Her neighbour Janamma advises her and brings her out of the dark
room.
ARRIVAL OF SHANTA BAI AND THE RIFT IN THE FAMILY
Shanta Bai is appointed in Ramani’s office and she lives alone separated from her
husband. Ramani helps her by providing a room in his office and some furniture
from his house. He starts to spend more time with her in office. He wanders with her
in the whole town including the park and cinema hall.
SAVITRI’S DECISION
When Savitri comes to know about this affair she warned her husband to give up the
relationship. But he does not bother her words. She does not want to live with her
impure husband. She throws all her jewels at her husband and leaves the house alone
at night. She feels helpless. Though she is loyal to her husband she has been cheated ,
so she decides to commit suicide and jumps into the river Sarayu but she has been
saved by Mari, a blacksmith and his wife Ponni.
