,CLASSIFICATION
OF STROKE
, Stroke
● Acute stroke is characterised by the rapid appearance (usually over minutes) of a
focal deficit of brain function, most commonly a hemiplegia with or without signs of
focal higher cerebral dysfunction (such as aphasia), hemisensory loss, visual field
defect or brain-stem deficit.
● Classification = based on the duration and evolution of symptoms.
Transient ischaemic attack (TIA): symptoms resolve within 24 hours.
Stroke: symptoms last more than 24 hours.
Progressing stroke (/ stroke in evolution): focal neurological deficit worsens after
the patient first presents.
Completed stroke: the focal deficit persists and is not progressing.
