AMERICAN CIVILIZATION ENDTERM

1. How has immigration formed American cities? ✅
The cities became more multicultural, there is increased migration, more politically liberal views,
more diverse cuisines appear.
2. What age does The Great Gatsby depict? Describe this kind of age. ✅
It depicts the roaring 1920s (parties), prohibition era (no alcohol), Jazz era (jazz music), drugs,
cussing… Old Money (born into), New Money – Make your own money (Gatsby, American Dream
representation)


Gatsby throws parties because of a love interest: Daisy. He does not get the girl
because he dies of a gunshot. His goal was to get the girl, he had enough money, but
Daisy chose the Old Money. Gatsby viewed Daisy as a tool)



3. Define the American Dream. ✅
The definition of the American Dream was first written in 1931. Liberty, freedom, stability, through
hard work and dedication. From rich to poor. Social mobility. Moving up the ladder. Why?
Capitalism. Connect it to cities! Reflection and representation of the American Dream. You become a
city dweller, more freedom, opportunity, money… etc.

4. Why did American cities develop fast? ✅
Money, resources (geographical: all climates can be found, many mines; near water: transportation, e.g.
river: Mississippi; immigrant workers / professionals to build their cities), compare it to Europe.

5. What are the promises/advantages of a city? ✅
 More opportunities:
 Schools
 Colleges
 Infrastructure
 Better public transport
 Hospitals, Fire stations, Police… etc.
 Entertainment
 Better jobs  Higher salary

6. Criminal underworld emerged after the American Civil War ✅
Post-bellum period – Maffia appeared after the American civil war.
7. The greatest contrast among newcomers in the modern city accentuated by the discordant
features of ethnicity and race loomed largest in the case of newcomers of Asian and African
origins. ✅
Visible difference, hard to understand Chinese, communist countries are opposed.

8. Gibson Girls vs. Flappers ✅
Gibson girls: Typical women in 18 hundreds: modest, didn’t swear… etc.
Flappers: Immodest, more skin was exposed, bad manners, cussing,
drinking, rebellion against the stereotypical women.
