Median Plane
Passes from the top to the bottom and separates the body into right and left.


Medial
Positions TOWARD the median plane


Lateral
Positions AWAY from the median plane


Sagittal Plane
Any plane parallel to the median


Coronal/Frontal Plane
Separates the body into the forward half and the back half.


Anterior
Refers to objects in front of the plane


Posterior
Refers to objects on the back half of the body


Transverse Plane
Separates the body into an upper and a lower half.


Superior
Positions above the transverse plane


Inferior

Flexion
Extension
Flexion- bending movement that DECREASES the angle between two parts. ex. bending the elbow
Extension- opposite of flexion-straightening the movement that INCREASES the angle between body
parts. EX. when standing up the knees are extended


What is Abduction?
Away from the midline of the body
Ex. raising the arms, laterally, to the sides.


What is Adduction?
Away from the midline of the body.
ex. bringing the knees together.


What is pronation?
a rotation of the forearm that moves the palm from an anterior facing position to posterior facing
position. AKA palm facing down.


What is supination?
The rotation of the arm where the palms are facing up.


What is dorsiflexion?
Flexion of the entire foot superiorly.
Ex. taking ones foot off an automobile pedal


What is plantarflexion?
Flexion of the entire foot inferiorly, as if pressing an automobile pedal. Occurs at the ankle.


What is eversion?
The movement of the sole of the foot away from the median plane.


What is inversion?
The movement of the sole towards the median plane. (Same as when an ankle is twisted)


What is supine mean?
Lying on the back, face up


What is prone mean?
Lying face down, on the stomach


What does proximal mean?
Toward or nearest of the trunk of the body.
Ex. the proximal (top) end of the femur joins with the pelvic bone.
