The cells of immune system arise from These leucocytes circulate in
the bone marrow. In the bone marrow bloodstream, reside within peripheral
most of these cells develop as well as tissues or circulate in lymphatic
mature. These cells are known as vessels of lymphatic system. Thus,
White Blood Cells (WBCs) or leucocytes are dispersed throughout
leucocytes (in Greek, “leukos”: white; the body.
“kytos”: cell). They are also known as
immune cells.

Types of leucocytes

Leucocytes have been classified into Both groups have granules in their
two groups on the basis of their cytoplasmic matrix, but they are
appearance in stained blood smear visible under light microscope in case
under light microscope of Granulocytes and invisible in case
of Agranulocytes (the cytoplasm
1. Granulocytes
appears uniform). These granules
2. Agranulocytes
contain substances which help in
destruction of microbes and pathogens
directly or indirectly.
