Sustain It!!

Ways responsible tourism is managed within tourist destinations;

Visitor and traffic management
There are multiple ways to control a traffic flow. One of the effective
strategies used by work placements is a cycle to work schemes to
reduce C02 emissions. Speed limits and congestion charges are also
used as a traffic management tool to reduce and control the amount of
traffic caused by vehicles roaming about on roads. Within the UK,
congestion charges are mainly used within populated areas such as
Waterloo, London Bridge, Westminster and many more, this is to help
reduce populated areas with an overcrowd with both tourists and
residents. The Lake District National Park traffic regulation commands for non – restriction and
restricted byways, public footpaths, bridleways and carriageways with a principally unsealed surface
within the National Park.
In my opinion, congestion has a negative impact on tourism, an example of this impact can be seen
in popular destinations. For example, Malham within the Yorkshire Dale National Park can become
overcrowded with visitors and vehicles during peak times. Also, over fill in car parking due to many
visitors and residents travelling by cars, leading to visitors/residents parking alongside roadsides –
causing hectic traffic build ups within the countryside.

Planning control
By having a governmental system aids to minimise the negative effect of building infrastructure on
the environments. For organisations within the UK planning on emitting gases will need to go
through a long health and safety procedure, this includes type of business with a full plan as a
report. This report will have to include ways the organisation can promote tourism as well as the
positive and negative aspects of the organisation the organisation can contribute to the tourism
industry. Within Kenya, tourism organisations will need to build a report with an up to date plan that
mainly prevents their organisation from harming the natural and wildlife environment.

Executing changes due to a result of an environmental impact assessments, an example can be
aircrafts from TUI reducing their C02 emissions with their ‘step lightly’ project. Within the Lake
District National Park within the UK, has made a few amendments for tourists visiting the park such
as reducing speed limits of boats cruising on Lake Windermere. They have also presented rules on
fire beaters to stop BBQ’s within the park. Within Kenya, they made changes to protect their
environment by reducing the volume of visitors visiting safaris with non – eco - friendly vehicles and
persuading them to ride camels or horses instead. TUI sustainable strategies are the stepping lightly
scheme which was created to reduce environmental impacts on society, this can promote a greener
holiday as they are also ensuring their technology within their aircrafts and cruise ship are
environmentally friendly. This can create a positive change on both the destinations and the people
