Assignment 1 (Complete Answers) Semester 1 2021- Due 11th April 2024
Aggravated robbery increased significantly in South Africa over the last decade. 1.1 Identify and
discuss the three (3) types of robbers (without the use of a diagram)
Undoubtedly, aggravated robbery poses a significant threat in South Africa, and gaining insights
into the various profiles of robbers involved can offer valuable perspectives in tackling this
problem. Presented below are three frequently identified categories of robbers:
Opportunistic robbers
These individuals frequently engage in impulsive robberies, capitalizing on immediate
opportunities with minimal forethought or organization. They often target individuals or
properties that appear vulnerable in seemingly low-risk scenarios, such as poorly illuminated
streets or deserted areas. Opportunistic robbers rely on surprise and intimidation tactics to
execute their crimes, employing threats or physical force to compel victims into relinquishing
their possessions.
Organized crime groups
Sophisticated criminal syndicates engage in meticulous planning and coordination to carry out
large-scale robberies. These organized groups often focus on particular types of robberies, such
as bank heists or hijackings, and employ advanced strategies to evade law enforcement and
maximize their gains. With extensive networks at their disposal, which may include insiders
providing valuable information or assistance, these organized crime groups operate with
heightened effectiveness and pose significant challenges for dismantling.
Serial robbers
Serial robbers are individuals who engage in a series of robberies over an extended period, often
displaying consistent patterns or methods in their criminal activities. They may concentrate their
efforts on specific locations like convenience stores or gas stations, employing similar strategies
or techniques in each instance. Over time, serial robbers may exhibit escalating behavior,
becoming increasingly audacious or violent in their pursuit to avoid capture or fulfill their
criminal desires. Due to their elusive nature and tendency to operate across multiple
jurisdictions, identifying and apprehending serial robbers presents a significant challenge for law
enforcement.
Gaining insights into the motivations, behaviors, and attributes of these distinct robber types is
vital in formulating effective strategies for preventing and intervening in aggravated robbery
