Ethics -
\laws, universal principles which apply to all helpers, and/or standards of conduct
imposed by the ACA and NBCC; not always equal or identical to laws
"Dual relationship" -
\when multiple roles exist between client and counselor; has be recoined as
"noncounseling roles and relationships"; can be beneficial in some cases (attending a
graduation)
Documenting Dual Relationship -
\notes should include an explanation of its benefits and potential for harm
Sexual Relationships -
\never ethical; as a general rule a counselor should not engage with a client outside of
counseling environment for at least 5 years after termination
National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) -
\formed from ACA's focus on professional credentialing; cannot revoke state licensure
but can revoke NCC in ethical violations
CACREP -
\standards for counselor education and practices; an accrediting agency for counseling
programs that will be required for NCC eligibility starting in 2022
Accreditation -
\an agency meets certain standards and qualifications set forth by the accreditation
organization
Disadvantages of Accreditation -
\Can be costly, Have less room for alternative creative courses, Teachers are chosen
based on accreditation, so may not be the "best" teacher, and Could still be ineffective
Counselor Certification -
\recognize that you have reached a given level of competencies and are authorized to
use a title
Reciprocity -
\one state/organization accepts the license or credentials of another state/organization
Portability -
\ease that something can be transferred
