Unit 1 (Week 2) CIVE316 -- Prof Ping Dong -- 1
, Revision
1. Calculation with units
2. Manipulation of formula
3. Perform calculation based on correct concept
4. 4. Understanding engineering application
Unit 1 (Week 2) CIVE316 -- Prof Ping Dong -- 2
, Problem 1
A steady rainfall of 5mm falling on a catchment of 40km2. If the
volume of the runoff corresponding to the rainfall is 150000m3.
What are 1) the effective rainfall in m3 and 2) rainfall losses in mm.
Solution
Total rainfall volume = 5/(1000)×40×(10002)=200000m3
1) Effective rainfall volume = runoff volume =150000m3
Rainfall loss volume = 200000-150000=50000m3
2) Rainfall loss in mm = 50000/ [40×(10002)] ×(1000)=1.25mm
