DNP 801 Topic 6 DQ2 What are misrepresentations that can occur while reading other’s work and using its data? How can do you determine when data is a useful source of evidence for a project? Is it possible to misrepresent data and conclusions using statistics? Why or why not? How? What are misrepresentations that can occur while reading other’s work and using its data? Misinterpretation that can occur when reading other’s work is to interpret the p-value incorrectly (Sangseok, 2016). According to Sangseok, a p-value of 0.05 is not indicative of an accurate hypothesis (2016). What is most important when interpreting statistics is to seek if the p-value is accompanied by a confidence interval which supports the difference (Sangseok, 2016).

DNP 801 Topic 6 DQ2
What are misrepresentations that can occur while reading
other’s work and using its data? How can do you
determine when data is a useful source of evidence for a
project? Is it possible to misrepresent data and
conclusions using statistics? Why or why not? How?

What are misrepresentations that can occur while reading other’s
work and using its data?
Misinterpretation that can occur when reading other’s work is
to interpret the p-value incorrectly (Sangseok, 2016). According to
Sangseok, a p-value of 0.05 is not indicative of an accurate hypothesis
(2016). What is most important when interpreting statistics is to seek if
the p-value is accompanied by a confidence interval which supports the
difference (Sangseok, 2016).

How can do you determine when data is a useful source of evidence
for a project?
Determining useful sources for an evidence based projected should start by
asking yourself if the hypothesis is even reasonable (Empire State College,
2015). From here the researcher should ask themselves if the sample
accurately reflects the distribution of that which was studied (Empire State
College, 2015). Additionally, were the methods used reliable, do the findings
mean anything, and if two statistics were compared, did they measure the
same thing (Empire State College, 2015)?

Is it possible to misrepresent data and conclusions using statistics?
Why or why not? How?
Absolutely it is possible to misrepresent data. Take the p-value example
from above. A p-value alone “does not measure the probability that the
research hypothesis is true” (Sangseok, 2016, p. 109). By simply reporting
on the p-value, the conclusion can be falsified. One way to avoid this is to
look for a control group or a double bling study (Empire State College, 2015).
