, Vitamins are the organic substances which have to be
supplied in food in minute quantities to maintain the
biochemical and structural integrity of many cells and
tissues.
Based on their presence in natural foods ,2 types;
- Fat soluble vitamins eg: Vit A,D ,E,and K
- Water soluble vitamins eg: Vit C and Vit B
complex

Crucial role in normal visual process and the maintenance of health of
epithelial cells.
SOURCES : Fish, Liver, Butter, Ghee ,Cheese ,Egg yolks,Milk ,Dark green leafy
vegetables ( spinach) , Carrot , Pumpkin ,Mangoes, Papaya.
Deficiency - Blindness
Symptoms
Earliest Symptom is Night blindness ,followed by degenerative
changes in the retina.
The bulbar conjunctiva becomes dry,and rough grayish triangular
foamy raised patches appear ( BITOT’S SPOT)
When the cornea also become dry and luster less,it is called
XEROPHTHALMIA.
The cornea softens ,opacifies,ulcerated and necroses,this is called
KERATOMALACIA.These changes follow if Xerophthalmia is left
untreated.This leads to perforation,prolapse of the iris and
endophthalmitis and leading to BLINDNESS.
