The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that was tasked to “maintain
international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international
co-operation and be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations” (UN.com). The United
Nations is made up of 5 permanent members: The United States, The United Kingdom, Russia,
France and China as well as 10 non-permanent members (Magstadt, 2017). Each country of the
“Big 5” can veto a proposed peacekeeping bill.
