A pap smear is a screening method used in medicine
to detect any early signs of cervical cancer in women.
This screening techniques is used to identifying
abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix – which is
the lower part of the uterus that connects to the
vagina. Early detection helps to prevent the
development of cancers/ diseases such as cervical
cancer by having early treatment.
During a pap smear a health care provider uses
a small tool to collect a sample of cells from
the cervix, these cells will then be taken to a
laboratory to be examined under a
microscope. The lab technicians then look for
any abnormalities in size, shape or
arrangement of the cervical cells.
