Shipley-2 Purpose
Assess General level of cognitive functioning in adults and adolescents.
Shipley-2 Original Purpose
Originally designed as an index of intellectual deterioration, brain damage and illness. Poor
performance in this capacity
Shipley-2 Theory/Technique
1. Based on theory that verbal skills (crystallized knowledge) are more resistant to changes due to
cognitive deterioration whereas abstract reasoning ability (fluid reasoning) deteriorates first more
rapidly.
2. Therefore, a contrast in vocabulary and abstraction skills be indicative of cognitive impairment
3. Assumes verbal and abstract abilities start out approximately equal

7 years to adult (89 years)

Excellent brief screening tests of intelligence used in educational, clinical, employment, and research
settings
Shipley-2 Test Description
Two Subtests:
1. Vocabulary: 40 M/C vocabulary items (select synonym), 10 minutes, Power test, Not speeded
2. Abstraction: 25 abstract reasoning items (completion), 12 minutes, Power test, Not speeded
*May substitute Block Patterns subtest for Abstraction Subtest
3. Block Pattern: nonverbal, M/C, 10 min.
Shipley-2 Scores
1. Each subtest and the overall composite scores are standardized
2. M=100, SD=15
3. Composite score indicates overall cognitive ability. Raw scores converted to standard scores and
percentile ranks for each test
