Foundations of American democracy book chapter
Foundations of American democracy Sample: The Constitution of the United States is over 200 years old and has remained the framework of our government. Throughout U.S. history, debates over the proper role of government in our society have continued. Our first national government, under the Articles of Confederation, was so limited that some questioned whether it was a government at all. Because the Constitution provided mechanisms to strengthen the national government, it was initially viewed as too radical a document to ever be ratified, and opponents to the Constitution declared that national government powers under it dangerously threatened state sovereignty. Supporters of the Constitution argued that it was necessary to bring the nation out of the chaos that existed under the Articles of Confederation.
