Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a serious lung condition that disrupts oxygen flow throughout your body. Healthy lungs allow oxygen to enter your bloodstream and carry it to your organs. In ARDS, fluid builds up in the tiny air sacs (alveoli) of your lungs. This fluid prevents your lungs from inflating properly, hindering oxygen from reaching your bloodstream. As a result, your organs become starved of oxygen.
