Generator Construction and
Operation: Mechanics, Voltage,
and Resistance
Mechanics

 A generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy.
 It consists of a rotating coil (armature) and a static coil (field
magnet).
 The rotation of the armature in the magnetic field of the field
magnet produces a current in the armature coil.
 The mechanical energy required to rotate the armature can
be provided by various prime movers such as steam
turbines, internal combustion engines, or water turbines.

Voltage

 The voltage produced by a generator depends on the speed
of rotation of the armature and the strength of the magnetic
field of the field magnet.
 The voltage can be controlled by adjusting the field current
or the speed of rotation of the armature.
 The voltage produced by a generator is given by the formula
E = P * Φ * Z / 60, where E is the voltage, P is the speed of
rotation (in revolutions per minute), Φ is the magnetic flux
(in webers), and Z is the number of conductors in the
armature.

Resistance

,  The resistance of the armature circuit plays an important
role in the operation of a generator.
 The resistance affects the current produced by the generator
and the power output.
 The resistance can be adjusted by changing the number of
conductors in the armature or by using a rheostat.
 The resistance should be kept as low as possible to ensure
efficient operation of the generator.

Moving Coil Voltmeter and Ammeter
Combined Instrument

 A moving coil voltmeter and ammeter combined instrument
is used to measure the voltage and current in a circuit.
 The instrument consists of two separate moving coil meters
mounted on a common spindle.
 The voltmeter is connected in parallel with the circuit and
measures the voltage.
 The ammeter is connected in series with the circuit and
measures the current.
 The instrument is calibrated to read directly in volts and
amperes.

Measurement Techniques: Clutch and
Hand-driven Crank

 The mechanical energy required to rotate the armature of a
generator can be provided by a clutch and hand-driven
crank.
 The clutch is used to connect and disconnect the prime
mover from the generator.
 The hand-driven crank is used to rotate the armature
manually.
 This technique is useful for small generators used for
emergency power or for educational purposes.
