A mother figure in my life has always been my mother. She has brought us up with immense
zeal and discipline. My mother is a disciplinarian. She demands responsibility and
accountability at all times. My mother raised us in a tough way so that we may survive and
stand up against the cruelty in this world. As a Punjabi ethnic group, we were already
disadvantaged at life. It meant that we have to work extra hard to fight racism and
discrimination. At age seventeen, my mother made a difficult decision to bring my brother
and I to Canada. It was a difficult decision that required courage. Sending away children to a
foreign country with no relative or friend is not easy. However, it was a courageous decision
so that our life fortunes could improve. There was better hope in Canada compared to India.
However, the dangers of racism, new climate, and hostility were present. But she
encouraged us to stay focused on our life goals so that we could have a better life.
