Future of Nursing Report
Nursing is a fundamental component of the health system. Without nursing, the health
system will crumble. Nurses bring a combination of knowledge, skills, and dedication to address
health inequalities in the society and promote positive health outcomes and wellbeing for all. The
purpose of this paper is to dissect "The Future of Nursing 2020-2030’ report and provide
initiatives that are advancing nursing profession while identifying any existing barriers.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conducted research
that led to the “Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity"
report. The work of the committee that led to the report was based on identification of the
health inequalities that exist in the American society. The committee was keen to realize that
nurses are pivotal in healthcare. They are the first line of contact with the patient before other
health professionals step in. therefore, the committee confirmed that the American nation will
not thrive if people are not healthy (Flaubert et al., 2021). To achieve a healthy society, nurses
should be given the resources and tools to attain health equity. The work of the committee also
found that there is an intersection between health and other professions. Sciences, engineering,
medicine, and education all have a role to champion for the nursing profession to attain health
equity and build a healthy nation. The intersection of nursing with other professions is
important and that instigated the report (Flaubert et al., 2021).
Nursing shortage has emerged as trend in the nursing workforce. According to the IOM
report, there are insufficient numbers of people qualified to fill nursing roles (Grand Canyon
University, 2022). Many of the current nursing workforce are nearing retirement. And with the
growing population and low enrollment rates in nursing schools, nursing shortage has been a
