The psychosocial theory of personality combines elements of psychological and social factors to
explain personality development.
Erik Eriksen is a pronounced psychologist who proposed the theory of personality to highlight
the Lifelong impact of social experience on an individual development. Erik Eriksen emphasized
interplay between an individual psychosocial growth and the social environment, asserting that
the resolution of these conflict shapes personality, identity and social relationships throughout
of Life.
Erik Eriksen Outlined the Stages of Psychosocial development, each stage was marked by a
unique conflict that individual must resolve to progress successfully:
1. Trust vs Mistrust (infancy) 0-1 years: Establishing a sense of trust in care givers
forms the basis of this Stages.
2. Autonomy vs Shame and doubts (Early Childhood) 1-3 years: Children develop a
sense of independence and autonomy while exploring boundaries.
3. Initiative vs Guilt (Pre-school) 3-6 years: Children develop a sense of control and taking
initiative in activities balancing this with a sense of responsibilities.
4. Industry vs Inferiority (School age): Focused on developing a sense of conference
and accomplishment through learning new skill and social interaction.
5. Identity vs Role confusing (Adolescence) 12-18 years: Adolescents explore and develop
a sense of self identity, navigating roles and beliefs.
6. Intimacy vs Isolation (Young adulthood): Forming intimate social relationship
while avoiding feeling of isolation and loneliness.
7. Generativity and Stagnation (Middle adulthood) 19-29 years: Contributing to
society and future generations feeling a sense of accomplishment versus feeling
stagnant.
8. Integrity vs Despair (Late Adulthood) 65 Onward: Reflecting on life, accepting as a
whole and feeling a sense of fulfillment versus despair and regret.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ERIK ERIKSEN’S PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT.
The characteristics of psychosocial development theory of social development are as
follows:
1. Eriksen believed that human development takes places in a predetermined
which includes the eight stages of psychosocial development from infancy to
adulthood.
2. He maintains one can achieve a healthy personality only after they have completed
the eight stages of psychosocial development.
3. Eriksen believes that the ego develops the ideas, skills and attitudes of individuals
during each developmental stage.
