Technical & Tactical – Assignment 1
In my assignment I will be talking about all the technical and tactical terms in my 3 chosen
sports. Technical is how well a skill is performed, for example in rugby this might be how
arcuate a rugby player can spin pass a ball. How fast a cricketer can bowl a ball as well as
being accurate at the same time. Also in football how much control you have over the ball
whilst dribbling the ball. Therefore a tactic is ‘a plan that is made before you start playing in
a game which consider you own or your opponent’s strength and weakness (bbc.co.uk).
The Discrete, Serial and Continuous Continuum
A continuous skill have no obvious beginning or end. For example there is no beginning or
end in walking because you are doing the same motions over and over again and there is no
complete beginning or end because you are doing the same movement over and over again
and there isn’t a clear begging or end. It is the same for swimming and cycling as well
because there is no obvious begging or end to these movements because you are doing the
same movement over and over again, the same as walking.
Serial skills are a group of discrete skills strung together. For example triple jump is a good
example of a serial skill. With a triple jumper if the order in which you do the discrete skills
are very important. If you do you discrete skills with distinct parts, the order in the way you
do it is very important. As a triple jumper you need to have good distinct parts in your
movement otherwise you’re not going to for fill your full potential. Another examples of
serial skills are high jump and dribbling because they have lots of distinct parts and without
those small distinct parts you won’t be able to do these skills.
Therefore discrete skills are a brief but well-defined skills strung together and have a
defiant beginning and end. Good examples of a discrete skills are penalty kick in football,
golf swings and penalty kick in rugby. Those 3 are good examples because it’s just a quick
burst of movements and also have a clear beginning and end.
The Gross and Fine Continuum: This continuum is concerned with the precision of
movements - gross and fine skills. A gross movement is are large muscle movements for
example shot put and javelin. Fine skills are small muscle groups, for example snooker.
These movements are usually very precise movements as well.
The Open and Closed Continuum: This continuum is concerned with the effect of the
environment on skills (knapp 1967).
Open skills are usually externally paced, for example a pass in football, netball or hockey
because they are based around other people decisions with in the game.
Closed skills usually tend to be self-paced, for example a free throw shot in basketball,
serving in tennis or a golf swing. These are closed skills because it’s up to you when you
decide when to play your shot and no one else choice.
