Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
In this assignment I will be analysing my own performance in rugby and identify my
strengths and weaknesses. I will be working with my coach on areas I could improve on.
From this we can make a more relevant training sessions for myself.
Technical is how well a skill is performed, for example in rugby this might be how arcuate a
rugby player can spin pass a ball. How fast a cricketer can bowl a ball as well as being
accurate at the same time. Also in football how much control you have over the ball whilst
dribbling the ball.
Therefore a tactic is ‘a plan that is made before you start playing in a game which consider
you own or your opponent’s strength and weakness (bbc.co.uk).
In this assignment the way I’m going to be analysing my own performance is by using an
observational checklist and video analysis.
An observational checklist is a good way to analysis player’s performance on the pitch. The
advantages of an observational checklist is that you can find players strengths and
weaknesses, see what patterns of play your team players and how effective an individual
performs. The disadvantages of an observational checklist is that it’s hard to administer
because the speed of the game and also sometimes hard to clarify what player did what.
Video analysis is a good way to analysis a player’s performance on the pitch. The advantages
of video analysis is that you can see the the player strength and weaknesses because you
can actually see what you’re doing right and wrong when looking at the video. The
disadvantage of it that is the camera might not be at a good angle so it could look different
to what it is. Also its quite expensive equipment and not all teams may not be able to afford
it.
I could have done other ways to analysis my performance for example performance
profiling. Performance profiling is when you and your coach will identify your qualities and
give it a rating out of 10 being the best and 1 being poor. The only problem with this
method is that you and your coach may not agree on the same things. So because of that
reason that’s why I have chosen video analysis and observational checklist to analysis my
own performance.
