Ampicillin - Answer- Universally used to treat for possible infection right after birth, only antibiotic for Listeria meningitidis, also GBS. IV, virtually no known side effects in neonates. Ativan (lorazapam) - Answer- Similar to midazolam, except lasts longer. (Benzodiazepine). Decrease agitation to activity or condition. Oral, IV, Rectally, intra-nasally. Resipiratory depression. BiCitra (sodium citrate) - Answer- Used for too much acid in baby's blood because kidneys are losing too much bicarbonate (common in premature babies). Very safe, similar to wrong stuff in the first place being excreted. N/V, stomach pain, mild/occasional diarrhea. Caffeine - Answer- Stimulates breathing, treat apnea of prematurity. May decrease risk of developing chronic lung disease. May stimlate kidneys to make urine. May stimulate long-term brain development. Oral/IV Considered safe, though long in the body. Cefotaxime - Answer- Antibiotic to treat suspected infection (2nd generation cephalosporin, broad activity against most gram positive organisms and some gram negative).
