Apnea
Absence of breathing.
Aspiration
Breathing fluid, food, vomitus, or an object into the lungs.
AVPU
Memory aid for classifying a patient's level of responsiveness or mental status. The letters stand for
alert, verbal response, painful response, unresponsive.
Blunt trauma
An impact on the body by objects that cause injury without penetrating soft tissues or internal organs
and cavities.
Brain herniation
Occurs with a significant amount of swelling and/or bleeding to or around the brain. Creates excessive
pressure in the skull and causes the brain to be compressed downwards toward the brainstem.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Plasma-like clear fluid circulating in and around the brain and spinal cord.
Chief complaint(CC)
In emergency medicine, the reason EMS was called, usually in the patient's own words.
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath.
Extension posturing
Patient arches the back and extends the arms straight out parallel to the body. Also known as
decerebrate posturing.
Flail Segment
Two or more adjacent ribs that are fractured in two or more places and thus move independently
from the rest of the rib cage.
Flexion posturing
A posture in which the patient arches the back and flexes the arms inward toward the chest. A sign of
serious head injury. Also called decorticate posturing.
Modified secondary assessment
A physical exam that is focused on a specific injury site, performed on a responsive patient with no
significant mechanism of injury or critical injuries; or on a medical patient who is alert, oriented, and
stable.
