How does the nurse provide denture care? What is the most important safety measure?
Encourage patients to clean their dentures on a regular basis to prevent gingival infection and
irritation. They must be removed at night to rest the gums and prevent bacterial buildup.

Procedure for care of dentures:
- Identify patient
- Ask patient if dentures fit and if there is any tenderness or irritation
- Hand hygiene and gloves. Fill sink with tepid water with a washcloth at the bottom
- Remove dentures. If patient is unable to remove them independently, grasp upper plate with gauze
and pull downwards. Lower denture, gently lift from jaw and rotate one side downwards. Place
dentures in sink.
- Apply cleaning agent to brush and brush surfaces of dentures
- If patient uses adhesive, apply a thin layer to undersurface before inserting
- If patient needs help inserting dentures, moisten upper dentures and press firmly to seal in place.
Ask if dentures feel comfortable.
- To rest gums and reduce risk of infection, store dentures in a secure moist place.


How is oral hygiene different for the unconscious patient? What is the risk factor? How is safety
maintained?
Unconscious patients can't spit, or swallow, they need suction and their heads need to be positioned
downward to prevent aspiration. The secretion build up in their mouths from not swallowing or
spitting often contains gram negative bacteria that can cause pneumonia.

They must be protected from choking.


Why do you wipe the eyes from inner to outer canthus?
To keep as much buildup out of the lacrimal secretions.
