Respiratory Organs in fishes,
Air sacs
,The respiratory system consists of the organs and other
parts of body, involved in breathing and exchange of gases.
,Cells within the body must replenish the oxygen used and rid
themselves of the by-products accumulated during metabolism.
Two transport systems of the body do this job: the circulatory
and respiratory systems.
The circulatory system basically connects cells deep within the
body with the environment through a respiratory surface.
The respiratory system involves gas exchange between the surface
of an organism and its environment.
, The mechanism used by both the systems is of passive diffusion.
Passive diffusion is the random movement of molecules from an
area of high to an area of low concentration (partial pressure).
Oxygen is usually (but not always) at high partial pressure in the
environment and tends to diffuse into the organism. Carbon
dioxide collects in tissues and tends to diffuse out.
