Writing a paragraph
• A paragraph is a series of sentences on a specific point or topic.
Words:
- Words are the building blocks of sentences,
- You need to choose your words with care,
- Make sure the words are written and spelled correctly and say exactly what you wish to express
Sentences:
- Sentences are the building block of paragraphs.
- Use different kinds of sentences
- As well as different sentence length, to keep your writing interesting .
Paragraphs:
- Paragraphs are like building blocks that allow you to write different things,
- Such as descriptive essays, book, summaries, argumentative papers and so on
Writing is a process that consists of a number of steps:
1. Planning
2. Writing a first draft
3. Revising
4. Editing (and then rewriting)
5. Proofreading
6. Writing the final draft.
A good paragraph has:
1. Introductory sentence
• Introductory sentence tells you what the paragraph will be about.
2. The main/Topic sentence
• It express the main idea of the paragraph.
3. Supporting sentences
• Tells you more about the topic and gives you more information about the main idea or topic
sentence.
4. Conjunctions
• You have to join sentences and paragraphs together logically by using conjunctions.
• Such as: then, but, and others.
You can assess your paragraph using the following self assessment:
Does my paragraph have: Yes No
an introductory sentence
a topic sentence that contains the main idea
supporting sentences that follow in a logical order
different kinds of sentences of different lengths.
Did I do the following when writing my paragraph:
plan my paragraph
write a first draft
edit and proofread my draft
write my final draft neatly to hand in
