Twisting or axial rotation of a portion of bowel about its
mesentery.
If torsion > 180 degree – obstruction to the lumen.
If torsion > 360 degree – obstruction + vascular occlusion in the
mesentery – may lea d to gangrene & perforation.
Obstruction produced by volvulus is a dynamic obstruction –
peristalsis is working against a mechanical obstruction.
, Bacterial fermentation adds to distension (as a result of obstruction)
Intraluminal pressure increases (as a result of distension) & impairs
capillary perfusion.
Mechanical twisting – obstruction of mesenteric veins - thrombosis –
contributes to ischaemia.
