The Cerebrum: The Thinking Part of the Brain Introduction The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain, responsible for higher brain functions including: Conscious thought Memory Learning Perception Complex behaviors Anatomy of the Cerebrum The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres, each responsible for processing information from the opposite side of the body. Each hemisphere can be further divided into four lobes: Frontal lobe: associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech and motor function Parietal lobe: associated with sensory perception, attention, proprioception and processing of spatial information Temporal lobe: associated with auditory processing, memory, and speech comprehension Occipital lobe: associated with visual processing Each lobe contains functional areas that perform specific tasks, connected by white matter tracts that transmit signals between different regions of the brain. Cerebral Cortex The outer layer of the cerebrum is called the cerebral cortex, which is composed of gray matter containing billions of neurons. The cerebral cortex is responsible for complex cognitive functions such as: Conscious thought Perception Voluntary movement Decision making Brodmann Areas Brodmann areas are regions of the cerebral cortex that have distinct patterns of cytoarchitecture (neuronal structure) and function. There are 52 distinct Brodmann areas in the human brain, each responsible for specific cognitive functions. summary The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain, responsible for higher brain functions including: Conscious thought Memory Learning Perception Complex behaviors The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres and four lobes, each performing distinct cognitive functions. The outer layer of the cerebrum, the cerebral cortex, is responsible for complex cognitive functions, and Brodmann areas are distinct regions of the cerebral cortex with specific functions.
