Include the scope of the issue/problem. In the United States, healthcare-associated infections are ranked as the most prevalent adverse event. Initially, the term healthcare associated infections was used to refer to infections acquired in the acute care setting (Haque et al., 2018). However, the term is now used to refer to all infections acquired across numerous care settings, include ambulatory care, home care, family medicine clinics, and long-term care, among others. These infections are noted to appear within a patient’s first 48 hours or more after hospitalization (Haque et al., 2018). However, they can also occur within 30 days after one is released from care. These infections pose a significant risk to patient safety and health outcomes. They are associated with long-term disability, additional financial burden, prolonged hospital stays, avoidable deaths, and antimicrobial resistance (Zhang et al., 2019). According to the CDC, an average of 1.7 million hospitalized patients acquire hospital associated infections each year (Haque et al., 2018). Among these, an average of 98,000 die from the infections (Haque et al., 2018). The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality ranks hospital infections as one of the leading 10 causes of death (Haque et al., 2018). The agency also ranks hospital associated infections as one of the most common complications recorded in American hospitals. Among every 100 patients hospitalized patients, 10 and 7 patients in developing and developed nations get hospital-acquired infections (Haque et al., 2018).
