Carotid sheath
The carotid sheath is a fibrous sleeve enclosing the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve in the neck. It provides protection and structural support, facilitating their passage through the neck. The sheath also allows for coordinated movement among these structures during head and neck movements. Its fibrous nature helps maintain the relative positions of these vital structures, preventing potential compression or damage during movement. Additionally, the carotid sheath serves as a conduit for lymphatic vessels and sympathetic nerves. Overall, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and function of the structures it encapsulates within the neck.
