Lacrimal apparatus
The lacrimal apparatus comprises structures responsible for tear production and drainage. It consists of the lacrimal gland, which secretes tears, and its ducts that distribute tears onto the ocular surface. Tears then drain through the puncta, small openings located at the inner corners of the eyelids, into the lacrimal canaliculi. From there, tears flow into the lacrimal sac and subsequently into the nasolacrimal duct, which empties into the nasal cavity. This system ensures lubrication, nourishment, and protection of the ocular surface while maintaining eye moisture. Dysfunction of the lacrimal apparatus can lead to dry eye syndrome and other ocular disorders.
