Research Question
What are the main differences between AC and DC Power systems, and how do these differences
impact the design and operation of electrical systems in various applications.
Introduction
Power systems are crucial for the production, transition, and distribution of electrical energy in the
field of electrical engineering. The most utilized power systems are the alternating current (AC)
and the direct current (DC). Each system has its unique qualities, advantages, disadvantages, and
uses. AC power systems are alternating currents in which the direction of electric charge flow is
periodically changed (Shawn Hymel, 2018). Because of their effectiveness in transmitting power
over significant distances, AC systems are used in residential and industrial areas. Using
transformers (devices for voltage regulation) makes it possible for energy to switch from high-
voltage transmission to low-voltage distribution. DC systems rely on a constant flow of electrons
in a single direction (Pcb, R, 2021). Before using AC power systems, DC systems were a
commonly used technology. DC power systems have returned to the market primarily used in
niche markets like automobiles and renewable energy centres.
Background Knowledge
A single individual did not invent AC power. Instead, it was created by multiple scientists. One of
the leading figures recognized for this scientific invention and promotion was Nikola Tesla, a
Serbian American inventor and engineer. Tesla conducted an in-depth study of Alternative currents
and developed our knowledge of power transmission and distribution. One of Tesla’s inventions
was the induction motor, which made producing and distributing AC power possible. George
Westinghouse, a businessman, saw the potential in AC power systems and worked with Tesla to
develop and implement them. Westinghouse competed against Thomas Edison’s DC power
, system, also known as the “war of the currents”, with AC power becoming the dominant
technology.

Like the AC power system, the DC power system was not invented by a single individual but was
also created by multiple scientists. The DC power system is often credited as the work of Thomas
Edison, an American scientist and researcher. Even though the work was not fully credited to
Edison, he contributed substantially to advancing DC power systems. One of the first inventions
that led to his contribution was the first practical and viable electric light, the electrical power
destitution system, and the construction of the first commercial electric powerplant in New York
in 1882. A constant flow of electrons in one direction was produced using DC generators to
generate electricity. Edison’s DC power competed with the newly emerging alternating current
(AC) power systems, as mentioned promoted by Nicola Tesla and George Westinghouse. Its
improved long-distanced transmission capabilities created a rivalry that led to its participation in
the “war of the currents”.
