The paranasal air sinuses are a group of four paired air-filled cavities located in the bones surrounding the nasal cavity. These include the maxillary, frontal, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal sinuses. They serve several functions, including lightening the skull, producing mucus to moisten the nasal passages, and enhancing vocal resonance. Their openings allow for drainage and ventilation, but they can also be sites for infections such as sinusitis when obstructed or inflamed. Despite their proximity to the nasal cavity, they play no direct role in the sense of smell. Dysfunction of these sinuses can cause discomfort, headaches, and impaired breathing.
