Anatomical snuff box
The anatomical snuff box is a triangular depression on the dorsum (back) of the hand, located at the base of the thumb. It is formed by tendons of muscles, including the extensor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis. This area is clinically significant as it allows access to the radial artery, making it a common site for pulse palpation. Additionally, the snuff box is susceptible to injury, particularly in activities involving forceful thumb extension or direct trauma, which can lead to conditions like scaphoid fractures. Understanding its anatomy and clinical relevance aids in diagnosing and managing hand injuries effectively.
