CHEM 121 Lab 9: Inorganic Synthesis (Portage learning)
Experiment # 9 Inorganic Synthesis Purpose: Inorganic Synthesis of three compounds: Alum, Calcium carbonate, and Zinc Iodide. Procedure: Alum Place 1g of scrap aluminum into a flask. Using a graduated cylinder, measure out and add 50 ml of potassium hydroxide. Note reaction. Place under hood and heat on a hot plate. Note color of solution. Cool flask in a large beaker of water. Measure 30 ml of sulfuric acid and add to flask. Note precipitation formation. Heat solution until precipitation has dissolved. Flask with solution in an ice bath until crystals form. Filter out crystals and verify end-product with melting point capillary tube and IR Spectrum. Calcium Carbonate Place sodium carbonate into a beaker with calcium chloride and mix. Note the precipitate formed and filter it out. Measure out the substance yielded and perform IR spectrum test. Zinc Iodide Using a weight dish, measure out 2g of iodine and add to a flask. Note the color. Add 25 ml of methanol from a graduated cylinder and place onto a hot plate under the hood to reach the zinc with iodine. Note the color. Filter out the solution and boil off the water. The final product is zinc iodide. Measure out yielded substance and perform IR spectrum test. Data/calculations/results:
